Late Race Heroics Net Ballou Second Consecutive Dick Gaines Memorial Win
PETERSEN MEDIA: Saturday night at Lawrenceburg Speedway, Robert Ballou would get by Jared Andretti coming to the checkered flag during the Dick Gaines Memorial feature event to win the race for the second consecutive year and give him his fourth win of the 2018 season.
“Jared (Andretti) was really good, and was nailing the bottom perfectly,” Ballou said. “I finally had to go try the top out see if I could get around him and it was a little sketchy but it worked out and we were able to grab the win coming to the line.”
Earning quick time honors on Saturday night, Ballou would race his way to a heat race win and line the Dickinson Farms/Lucas Oil Products/Abreu Vineyards backed No. 12 machine up in the third row to start the feature event.
When the race came to life, Ballou would have a very strong racecar that saw him quickly work his way forward on a trick Lawrenceburg Raceway surface. Making some nice moves, Ballou would soon find himself in second and chasing after Jared Andretti.
A caution with three-laps left in the race would set up what would be an epic finish between the two drivers. When the race resumed both drivers would dive low in turns one and two with Andretti keeping ‘The Mad Man’ at bay.
Running nose to tail through three and four, Andretti would take a peak at the top of turns one and two with two to go and it would allow Ballou to stick the bottom and pull up along the leader as they would actually bang wheel heading down the back stretch.
With the leader getting back to the bottom in front of Ballou in three and four, the Rockin, CA native would take the white flag in the second spot and would have one more lap to make something happen.
Going high in turns one and two, Ballou would build up his momentum as Andretti stayed glued to the bottom. Letting it all hang out, Ballou would rail the fence in turns three and four and use the momentum to fly by the leader out of turn four to win the Dick Gaines Memorial.
